Alumni Spotlight: Rocky Pike – Studying Psychology at UWA

Meet Rocky Pike, a graduate of the Class of 2024 who’s now studying Psychology at the University of Western Australia. His journey from a Year 10 Careers class to following his passion at uni is a great example of how discovering what you love can shape your future. Read on to hear about his experiences as well as advice for current students.

What are you currently studying, and where?

I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Psychology at the University of Western Australia.

How did you decide on your current career or study path?

I first discovered my interest in Psychology back in the Year 10 Careers class, where we explored different career options based on our interests. Early on, I realised that I wanted to help people, and taking Psychology along with my Humanities-based ATAR courses really solidified my decision.

How did the College support you in deciding what to do after graduation?

Midway through Year 10, I had to decide between ATAR, General, and VET courses. I was grateful for how the College explained each of these pathways and what they opened for us after leaving school. They also reassured us that there were many options available and that we shouldn’t stress over the small things.

How did Our Lady of Mercy College help prepare you for what you’re doing now?

OLMC was fantastic in making my opportunities known, by hosting guest speakers from different universities and organisations. This helped me gain confidence in what was a very scary but very exciting next step in my life. And now that I'm up in the city studying at my dream uni, I couldn't be happier with the support from the Mercy community.

Were there any teachers, subjects, or programs that had a lasting impact on you?

All of my ATAR subjects—Psychology, Religion & Life, Modern History, English, and Visual Art—hold a special place in my heart. Each day, I learnt something new and unique that has stayed with me.

What would stick with me the most is Visual Art ATAR with Mrs Todesco. I have never met a more dedicated individual, and having her guide me throughout ATAR was a true gift. Through all the highs and lows, it was so worth seeing my practical done and achieving the marks that it did.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

In the next five years, I see myself starting my PhD in Clinical Psychology, surrounded and supported by my family and friends. I also hope to see my artwork take off and establish an online gallery to sell my pieces.

If you could give one piece of advice to current students about preparing for life after school, what would it be?

My biggest piece of advice to current students would be: When times get tough academically, spend time with family—whether it’s mum and dad, extended family, or even friends. Taking the time to just exist in the world is a great way to reset and recharge. You’ve got this!
