Career Services Christmas Wrap-Up: Thank You to Our Local Business Partners

Our Lady of Mercy College Career Services staff have been visiting businesses in the region that have supported the following College programs:

  • Workplace Learning

  • Year 10 Work Experience Week

  • Vocational Education & Training Industry Hours for VETDSS Certificate courses

To show our gratitude, the team have been dropping off a Christmas card and thank you gift to businesses to acknowledge their contribution to providing real-world learning experiences for our students.

Throughout the year, we have worked closely with over 150 host businesses that have provided students with placements.

Please scroll down to see a list of the generous businesses that have supported our students on their learning journeys.

2024 has presented our students with some excellent opportunities to learn and explore jobs and careers through Workplace Learning and Work Experience programs. We have also seen students access traineeships and apprenticeships as a result of their hard work in those programs.

The Workplace Learning program was highly valued by our students and they provided some fantastic feedback on their placements. Madeline Iannello (Year 10) summed up the value of her experience:

“I have truly loved the time I have spent at Young Bucks, and I have learnt so much that I did not know before. I absolutely love spending time in the rooms and making connections with the children, the number of memories I have made with the kids are endless. Working alongside some children experiencing learning difficulties definitely challenged me, but it also pushed me and taught me to express things in different ways and more creative ways. I love watching the children play with each other and make friends. Every Tuesday, when I come to work placement, the kids always manage to make me smile and laugh. I have gained so much from my time at Young Bucks.”

This year, our students completed over 9,000 hours of Work Placement within the Years 10 – 12 Workplace Learning programs. We had 106 students engaged in these programs, with a breakdown of 66 Year 10 students, 20 Year 11 students and 20 Year 12 students.

For the Year 10 students, the program provides them with valuable experiences that will also assist them with subject selection and study options for Year 11.

132 Year 10 students, the largest cohort to date, participated in Year 10 Work Experience Week in Term 2. Collectively, they completed over 4,000 hours of work experience during the week.

Without the valued assistance and support of the local business community our students would not have had the opportunity to learn about the fantastic career opportunities available to them.

This is some of the feedback from our Year 10 students who participated in the program:

“I really enjoyed doing work experience because I got to meet so many wonderful staff members and connect with all the beautiful children. It was a wonderful experience that I will definitely never forget.”
“I enjoyed learning how to use different types of power tools and building things.”
“I have learnt how a workplace operates and developed my communication skills to suit a working environment. This experience has helped me gain confidence in the workforce.”
“I enjoyed working with the staff and hearing different ways of teaching. I also enjoyed working with the students and being able to build a connection with them as well as helping with their learning.”

Year 9 students moving into Year 10 in 2025 will receive information early in the New Year about the Year 10 Work Experience program.

The College looks forward to further developing strong relationships within our community and providing opportunities for our students to engage in real-world learning in the future.
