During our recent assembly, Sports Captains Adi and Will provided an update on some fantastic sports achievements within the College community:
Country Week
This year’s Country Week saw our largest team participation to date, with 10 teams representing the College. Notably, we fielded 3 A-grade teams (AFL, Dance, and Netball) for the first time. Overall, we achieved our highest points score ever at Country Week and won the E-grade basketball. It was great to see so many students eager to play and support other sports teams. Well done to all the coaches and students who participated.
College Cross Country
On Friday, 19 July 2024 the College held the annual Cross Country event at the Leschenault Leisure Centre Ovals.
Congratulations to Costello House for securing the win with 189 points! For all the results and photos please read the Mercy Story here.
ACC AFL
On Tuesday, 23 July, the South West Year 10 ACC AFL carnival took place. We fielded two competitive teams, both securing victories throughout the day. The girls' team played some closely contested games, winning one match 96-0. Led by captain Noah O’Dea, the boys' team remained undefeated and will now travel to Perth for the Division 1 finals. Congratulations to Coach Barraclough and the boys' team.
Interschool Cross Country
On Tuesday, 30 July, 48 students represented the College at the interschool cross country event on a wet day. The students performed admirably, displaying competitive spirit in each race. Special mentions go to Riley Teede and Caleb White, who both finished 3rd, and Lexi Piavinini, who finished 2nd but had to run the race again due to a marshalling error. Despite the setback, she gave her best effort. Well done to all our students who competed.
Gym Squad (from Mrs. Shields)
Last term, students from Years 7 to 10 participated in the Weightlifting WA Clean and Jerk competition for high school students. We would like to recognise the following students: Luke Franks, Matilda Crispin, CJ Sheahan, Dean Nicholls, Kai Bateman, and Kyle Jocson. This was the first time the College entered athletes in this competition, and for some, it was their first attempt at this lift.
Congratulations to all the athletes, with special recognition to Dean Nicholls, who recorded a clean and jerk of 75kg, placing him in the top 10 in the state. An amazing effort, considering Dean had only two weeks to prepare and was advised to watch YouTube clips of clean and jerks in his spare time. Our Lady of Mercy came 7th overall in the title of Strongest School. Thanks to Mrs Gaffney and the coaches from Ark Health and Fitness for their assistance in judging, recording, and offering advice on the day. Watch this space in 2025!
Special mentions
We want to take this time to acknowledge some outstanding individuals who have excelled in their chosen fields.
Congratulations to:
Dante Burnham – Lawn Bowls: Dante has made the WA Lawn Bowls Team and has been offered a scholarship at Cockburn Bowling Club.
Jay Pfoeffer, Matilda Crispin, and Kyle Jocson – competed at the Gold Coast in the 1st School Sport Australia National Swimming Games, performing exceptionally well in cold, windy conditions. Jay broke two country records and earned 1 gold medal (relay) and 1 silver medal (13yrs 100m breaststroke), narrowly missing the gold by just 0.02 seconds.
Matilda, participating in her first national competition, secured a bronze medal on the last day in the girls' 6-person relay. Kyle, also making his national debut, competed in multiple events each day of the meet, demonstrating great promise.
Ryan Denison: has been selected for the WA State Rugby Union Team
