Year 9 Career Taster: A Day on the Bunbury Outer Ring Road Project

A group of our Year 9 students recently had the exciting opportunity to learn about the Bunbury Outer Ring Road project. Hosted by the South West Gateway Alliance, the students were immersed in a full day of hands-on learning about various careers in the construction sector.

Alice, from the Alliance, expertly guided our students throughout the learning experiences. The day kicked off with an important Health and Safety session led by Jake, where students completed a safety induction. Adrian, the South West Gateway Alliance Director, spoke about his career as a Civil Engineer and how much he enjoyed his work.

Students had the opportunity to visit sections of the project and learn about the design and construction. A highlight was visiting the Collie River and completing an Aboriginal heritage monitoring and collection activity guided by Joanne.

Afterwards, students enjoyed lunch while learning more about the diverse roles involved in the project through conversations with staff members. The day finished with students visiting the Paris Road and Clifton Road interchange to learn how the bridge was constructed and the significance of the artwork. They learnt that the artwork on the bridge represents Djiba season.

It was fantastic to see our students actively engaged in practical tasks throughout the day, and their feedback about the experience was overwhelmingly positive.

“I enjoyed the hands-on bit where we tested the sand.” Jasmine
“It was a great experience. I enjoyed all of it, especially the last one, when I saw the bridge close up.” Paidyn

The College is grateful to South Regional TAFE and the South West Gateway Alliance for making the Year 9 Career Taster event possible.
